Scaling is the phase that exposes every shortcut a company took during its growth stage. The technical debt that was manageable with five engineers becomes paralyzing with fifteen. The product decisions that the CEO made by instinct now need to be made by a team that does not share the CEO's context. The customer base that was homogeneous enough to serve with one product is fragmenting into segments with conflicting needs.
At PR_D_CT DAY 2025 in Louvain-la-Neuve, Dominique Pellegrino, CEO of Vertuoza, shared the reality of scaling a product organisation from the construction-tech sector. Vertuoza builds software for the Belgian construction industry, a market that is simultaneously traditional and ripe for digital transformation. The scaling challenges Dominique describes are universal, but the construction-industry context adds a layer of complexity that makes the lessons especially vivid.
For the Walloon product professionals in the audience, many of whom work at companies approaching or entering the scaling phase, Dominique's talk served as both a warning and a guide. The warning: scaling will break things you thought were solid. The guide: here is how to rebuild them.
